Maybe it is the fact that New Zealand is so isolated, and sports offer an opportunity to come and play with the others. Maybe it is just a genuine interest for everything that can be hit, thrown, and run. But New Zealanders have an exceptional interest for sport.
Rugby is the big, and obvious one. Days before the games, everyone starts discussing them. Grandmothers, strangers on the street, shop attendants and customers.

But a few months ago, something else happened. New Zealand's soccer team made it into the World Cup (Sweden did not). We watched the game on a big screen down by the harbor. People were asking me for the rules, how long it went on, etc. Some of them had never watched a full soccer game before. Now, they are big fans.
Wellington's soccer team Phoenix is doing pretty good at the moment. Guess which sport is everyone's favorite at the moment?
