Three things that rock my boat

So, I've lived in New Zealand for almost a year now. It's been some lonely times, some awesome times, some hard times, and some seriously fun times. When I zipped off to Sweden, I got a chance to take a little step back, and see what I instantly missed with the country. There are a few things that really rock my boat, that are unique and fantastic and not to be found anywhere else.

Here is my list of New Zealand awesomeness:

1. Maori culture. There is something intensely sympathetic about the humble yet fierce and deeply rooted culture. I know it might sound like I am romanticizing but I am very drawn to it. I love that most geographic names are in Maori, I love the soft spoken and curious sounding accent and the built-in politeness, I love this song:

And I intend to learn much more. After all, Sam has got some serious Maori blood in him.

2. Tui birds. I actually missed them in Sweden, and whenever I hear one, I think about the first weeks in the country, the road trip and the summer that was just about to start. This peculiar bird always brings a smile to my face. See my old film for a proper tui song.

3. The east coast. Goes hand in hand with number one. The most rugged, remote place on the main islands, a place where time stood still and where you live as you please.

Tokomaru Bay last October. Being ridiculously happy in Sam's boxers.

I could write about many more things. The adventures, the friendliness, the food. But these are the things that first came to my mind when I was gone.

What do you love most about New Zealand, if you've been?

  1. I love Tokomaru Bay. And sunny days in Wellington. And skating down Cuba street. These are some of my favourite things. And the vege market and the fish lady.
