The Hills

I'm not talking about my favourite guilty pleasure. No, I'm talking about the fact that unless you live in the very central business district of Wellington, you live on a hill.

There is something very intriguing about imagining The Settlers of the capital, searching the whole country for the right place. Ditching the intensely dramatic fiords of the south, the golden bays of Abel Tasman, the sunny Hawkes Bay, the picturesque Bay of Islands, the hot and sunny far north with all its beaches. Only to decide that the windiest, rainiest, hilliest place they can find is the perfect place for the capital.

That's where we live, just behind the cable car.

Although I have to say that I can cope with sore legs when I can see skyscrapers, sea, forest, far away hills, a color-lighten fountain and a big grassy field from my window. Situated five minutes from the very city center.

There is a common saying about foreigners moving to Wellington - that due to hills and junk food, they get small bums and big tummies. Not exactly ideal.

  1. Haha I've experienced a small bum and small tummy so pretty ideal! Wellington was only made the capital city as the South Island was considering becoming a separate country. The first Capital was Russel in the far north. But I agree, it is a bit of weird place to construct a city! All the hills! Your new place has an awesome view, I'm jealous =) hopefully my next place will be nicer.
